As The Times reports in their recent article “Artificial plant mimics leaf to make fuel from sunlight”, a European collaboration has led to a photovoltaic-electrochemical (PV-EC) system for the reduction of CO2to ethylene and ethane. The presented system uses copper-based catalysts (earth-abundant) at both electrodes of the electrolyser, coupled to low-cost perovskite PV cells. A full description of this approach has been published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1815412116).

Congratulations to our supporting organisations involved, EPFL and GDR Solar Fuels!
