This approach is an unconventional methodology for photochemical conversion of atmospheric CO2 with high yields. Two different types of systems are considered in SUNRISE – biological and biohybrid– which both involve living microorganisms and are capable of direct solar energy conversion and storage. Microorganisms are inherently equipped with flexible biosynthetic pathways but are also capable of efficiently hosting novel and synthetic production pathways. This enables the production of a wide range of fuels and chemicals directly from sunlight and CO2 by utilizing strongly evolving synthetic biology toolboxes.
